Tomorrow at the Oscar's, everybody is assuming that "The King's Speech" is going to walk away with all the awards. Yikes. I just got done watching it, and I'll have to go ahead and disagree with all the critics out there.
First, let me be clear. "The King's Speech" was a really good movie. For PBS. It should win the award for best "Masterpiece Theater" episode of the year.
Colin Firth pulled off a great stammering king and Geoffrey Rush played a masterful speech therapist. There. I just described the entire movie and saved you eight bucks (I am assuming you would be seeing this at a discount matinée).
I'm not exactly sure why so many critics think this is the best movie of the year. Because it is British? Because Colin Firth does a great job stuttering? Because speech therapy is so enthralling? Because it is ever so lightly anti-Nazi? Who knows. I didn't like Inception all that much, but it was quite a bit better than this snoozer. As an aside, what the hell is Inception and Toy Story 3 doing amongst the best movie nominees? Come on. Jesus Christ.
Oh yeah. One more thing. The king's speech wasn't exactly a speech. I am not giving anything away here, but it was a radio address. Not a speech. I suppose "The King's Radio Address" would not have sounded as good. Neither would "The King's Speech Therapist Saves the Day."
If you decide to go out and see "The King's Speech" because it won a bunch of awards, just make sure to bring a pillow. Or wait a few months for it to be featured as the History Channels movie of the week.
